Patchway is a well-established area of South Gloucestershire, just north of Bristol, with a really varied mix of housing. You’ll find plenty of older terraced houses and semi-detached family homes alongside newer developments, giving the area a nice mix of character properties and modern living. Its location makes it particularly convenient for commuters, with Bristol Parkway station nearby and easy access to the M4 and M5. Patchway also has plenty of local amenities, schools, green spaces and places to eat, making it a popular choice for families and people working in Bristol and the surrounding areas. For us as a local electrician in Patchway, working on properties of different ages means we see everything from older electrical installations that need updating to brand-new systems being installed in modern extensions. It’s particularly important to think about the electrics when an older property is undergoing a major renovation, as was the case with a recent project we completed in Patchway.
Back to topWe recently worked on an older property in Patchway that was undergoing a serious transformation. The homeowner was having a very modern kitchen extension built, creating a much larger and more contemporary space, but the existing electrical installation simply wasn’t going to be suitable for the plans.
This is where getting an electrician involved early can make a huge difference. Rather than trying to add new circuits and electrical points onto an ageing installation, we carried out a rewire alongside the installation of a new consumer unit. This meant the electrical system could be brought up to modern standards while also being designed around the new kitchen and extension.
Modern kitchens can have a surprisingly large electrical demand. Ovens, induction hobs, extractor fans, dishwashers, fridges, freezers, boiling water taps and plenty of sockets for smaller appliances can all add up. When you’re creating a brand-new kitchen space, it makes sense to think about the electrics properly from the beginning rather than finding out later that you don’t have enough power or sockets where you need them.
Back to topIf you own an older house in Patchway, you may have no idea when the property was last rewired – and that’s not unusual. Electrical installations can last for many years, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re suitable for the demands we place on them today. A rewire gives you the opportunity to replace outdated wiring and improve the overall electrical installation. It can also be particularly worthwhile when you’re already carrying out major building work, renovating rooms or extending your property.
Nobody wants to have their walls and floors disturbed unnecessarily, so if you’re planning a major renovation, it’s worth talking to an electrician before the work gets too far underway. It allows the electrical work to be planned alongside everything else, rather than having to undo finished work later.
Back to topThe consumer unit is essentially the control centre for your home’s electrics, so having a suitable, modern unit is an important part of a safe electrical installation. When we install a new consumer unit in Patchway, we’ll assess the existing installation and make sure the new unit is appropriate for the property and the electrical demands it needs to handle. We’ll also carry out the necessary testing once the work is complete.
For the property with the new kitchen extension, installing the consumer unit as part of the wider rewire meant the whole electrical system could be considered together. It gave the homeowner a much better foundation for their newly modernised home.
