Been told you need a PAT test done but have no idea why? -  In this article we’ll explain everything you need to know about PAT testing, including why it’s so important.

What is PAT testing?

PAT testing (Portable Appliance Testing) is a form of electrical safety testing which checks each appliance for any defaults or safety issues which may cause harm to anyone who uses said appliance. To do this, the PAT test includes a combination of visual inspections and electrical testing. By passing the PAT test, the electrician is essentially saying this appliance is fit and safe for use - however, you should still regularly check the appliance for damage and advise your employees to do the same.

What will I receive following a PAT test?

Following a PAT test within your property, our electricians will provide you with:

  • A detailed set of test results relating to each appliance tested.
  • A full inventory list of each appliance, its location and a description.
  • A list of any failed appliances and reasoning of the failure.
  • A clearly visible sticker on each appliance with a pass label which will also have the date of the test, recommendation of the next test date, signed by the electrician.

Why are PAT tests important?

As a business owner, how would you feel if one of your employees was injured using an appliance at the workplace you provide? Now, put yourself in the shoes of that injured employee? They are not going to want to return after the incident and you may have just lost a valuable employee. Emotions aside, it’s also a legal requirement that you provide a safe working environment and have proof of doing so. A PAT test is just as important as other forms of safety testing and subsequently should be taken as seriously too. Failure to provide safe electrical equipment can result in huge fines for the property or business owner - from £5 - £20 grand! A PAT test is proof you’ve taken the steps necessary which will protect you and your business in the unfortunate event something does go wrong.

Can anyone carry out PAT testing?

No - PAT testing must ONLY be carried out by a fully qualified electrician. Using a registered electrician will ensure the PAT test is carried out to a high standard offering you and your employees better protection against faulty electrical equipment.

It’s only a small office, is it necessary?”

If your property has portable electrical appliances, then yes -  a PAT test is necessary. Even if that's just two computers, a printer and a kettle!
