An EICR is recommended for homeowners, almost like an MOT check.
Electrical installations are very much concealed behind walls and flooring so you don’t really see what's going on and if a potential fault is developing. An EICR of Electrical Installation Condition Report helps electricians like EMC Electrical Group to catch warning signs before they cause serious injury or property damage. We conduct EICR inspections for both homeowners and landlords across Bristol and have been doing so for many years. Our skills and well trained inspections will help save you money and time in the long run.
How often should I have an EICR at my home?
The recommendation for homeowners is every 10 years or if you’re just moving into a new property. We worked with first time homeowners who purchased a property on Crane Close at auction. To look at, the electrical installations were not in any obvious state of disrepair but the property was slightly dated and some electrical upgrades had taken place but not in recent years. While inspecting the standard lighting, wiring, outlets and switches, we did find the wiring in the kitchen flagged up a number of dangerous faults. As the outcome of the EICR resulted in "unsatisfactory" EMC Electrical Group discussed remedial work and rewiring options which did comply with modern standards, especially for a special location like the kitchen.
How long does an EICR take?
A standard EICR on an average 3 bed property can take between 3-6 hours. We’re an experienced team and very quick to identify faults when conducting an initial visual inspection of the property. The team has access to electrical equipment which helps us take measurements to confirm reading falls within a normal range. Not every EICR is the same so it's our duty to let you know that the older or more complex wiring can take longer to inspect. The location of wiring can also be problematic if access is blacked or hard to reach so requires more labour work.
Do I need to be home during an EICR?
The team at EMC Electrical Group will need access to all rooms at the property so it’s essential that you’re home. We will need access to the consumer unit which is often located in the cupboard under the stairs. If it's the dreaded cupboard where everything ends up being stored, you will need to clear the space so we can turn the power off during the inspection.
Sensitive equipment like alarms and WiFi routers should be unplugged as you probably know how they should be handled or operated.
Where to find an EICR electrician in Bristol?
Having worked with many domestic and commercial customers over the years, we do find a great deal of projects taken on by the team are down to referrals by existing customers. So a good place to find an EICR electrician is to ask a family member or friend.
The next step is to make sure you check the credentials of the electrician conducting the EICR. An inspection must be carried out by a qualified electrician such as EMC Electrical Group who is NICEIC approved, confirming compliance with industry standards.
