What is a distribution board?

The distribution board at your commercial premises serves the same purpose as the consumer unit or fuse board at a domestic property. For this reason, many people will refer to a distribution board as a consumer unit. Just like the fuse board at your home, a distribution board is responsible for splitting and then distributing the incoming electrical supply into individual circuits within your Bristol property. 

Its other function is to protect your property and employees from the risks of electrical fire and shock. To carry out this function it features similar protective devices to those found on a domestic fuse board such as RCDs and RCBOs. 

Why have a distribution board upgrade?

Like all other parts of your Bristol premises, a distribution board is not designed to last forever. With time and use, it will begin to show signs of wear and deterioration. • Flickering lights – One flickering bulb generally indicates a new bulb is needed, or a loose connection. However, if you notice multiple lights flicker or dim this may suggest you have issues at the distribution board.
• Buzzing noise – Electricity is silent. If you can hear buzzing noises coming from your distribution board, you need to call in your local commercial electrician straightway.
• Tripping at the board – If you have repeated tripping at the board, this can indicate your electrical system is overloaded.
• Minor shocks – If you or your employees notice they are receiving minor shocks from sockets this needs to be investigated.
