Electrical Inspections for businesses

What is an electrical inspection? Well, put simply it’s like an MOT on your electrical system. Typically this is known as an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). During an EICR the electrician will check the condition of your electrical system - taking notes of anything unsafe or that needs attention. Anything your electrician flags will be given a code, C1, C2, C3 or Further Investigation (FI). Don’t worry if you have no idea what these codes mean, we will explain each code fully, the fault detected and the next steps you need to take - this might mean remedial work. For now, let’s break down the codes briefly in terms you can understand:

  • C1: Danger is present & urgent repairs are needed.
  • C2: Potentially dangerous. A fault has been detected that needs attention soon
  • C3: Improvement recommended: Not currently a danger but could pose a risk if improvements are not made.
  • FI: Further investigation is required.

As well as EICRs businesses are also required to have other types of electrical testing carried out periodically. These include:

  • Portable Appliance Testing (PAT): Any appliances in a workplace setting must have a PAT test completed by a fully qualified electrician. This should take place once a year, perhaps more often for high risk settings like a factory with lots of electrical equipment.
  • Residual Current Device (RCD) testing: It’s strongly recommended your RCDs are tested regularly, especially after any major electrical work. To test RCDs your electrician will use the “applied current” method - this essentially measures the trip time of the device, ensuring it’s inline with industry standards.
