1) Spotlights

EMC Electrical Group are here to put Spotlights “under the spotlight” by detailing all we can about this service we can offer to you and your Bristol homes.

So, what is a Spotlight? This form of lighting projects a narrow beam of light onto an item or area. They can be wall mounted or attached to the ceiling and have little to no space between the fixture itself and the wall or ceiling. Also available as a track or multi-light. Track is fairly self-explanatory where the light fixtures are attached to a continuous track and multi-light has multiple spotlights attached to one mounting plate.

2) How do Spotlights work?

Commonly known for their use on stage and screen this type of light is often now found in our homes. They use a strong light source with lenses and reflectors that help shape and direct the light. An iris diaphragm adjusts the size of the spot or angle of the beam and even filters can be used to produce coloured light.

3) How Spotlights can be used in your Bristol home

EMC Electrical Group have placed Spotlights in many different areas and for different reasons in customers homes in Bristol. This ranges from wanting to highlight pieces of artwork or architectural features to putting a specific area “under the spotlight” such as a shower cubical or kitchen island. They have also been used to create an atmosphere in the home with soft ambient lighting and we have even used them to help customers. With the use of indirect Spotlights around your television screens it helps reduce contrast and eye straining.

4) What rooms in a house you would typically find Spotlights

Spotlights are typically found in five main areas of the home:

  • Hallways – brightening up a long hallway and produce even, diffused light
  • Bathrooms – needing to have an IP65 rating to protect against water
  • Kitchens – as above, IP65 can withstand low pressure water from all directions
  • Living Rooms – highlighting or casting shadows as required or placed centrally to light the whole space
  • Bedrooms – brightening up a reading nook or dressing table or even backlight a headboard

5) Where to place Spotlights?

EMC Electrical Group will always say the same, the best place to put Spotlights very much depends on the size of the room, the layout and the effect you would like as a result from them.

Unless a shadow is something you’re after Spotlights are best kept away from corners and edges of a room. Ceiling fans should also be avoided as the spinning blades can cause an unwanted flickering effect if placed closed by. We would also recommend they not be placed directly above your head when lying in bed.

The size and current layout of the intended room for Spotlights in your Bristol home can very much determine on their placement. In addition to this what are the needs of the room? Would task lighting be a purpose and if so that may determine Spotlights be placed in that area.
