What is PAT Testing?

PAT testing (Portable Appliance Testing), now also known as EET (Electrical Equipment Testing), is the process of inspecting and testing any plug-in electrical appliances to make sure they are safe for everyday use.

The name change from PAT to EET was introduced to eliminate confusion. Previously, the term "portable" led many to believe only items like laptops and toasters needed testing. In reality, all plug-in electrical equipment in a workplace or rental property should be inspected.

While PAT testing is not a specific legal requirement, employers and landlords have a legal duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 to ensure all electrical equipment is safe.

  • Visual inspection for damage, wear and incorrect wiring
  • Earth continuity and insulation resistance testing
  • Pass/fail labels applied to every appliance
  • Full written report with certification provided

What Gets Tested?

  • Computers, monitors & printers
  • Kettles, microwaves & kitchen appliances
  • Extension leads & power strips
  • Portable heaters & fans
  • Power tools & industrial equipment
  • Phone chargers & vending machines

Frequently Asked Questions

While there is no single law that specifically requires PAT testing, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require employers and landlords to ensure all electrical equipment is safe. PAT testing is the recognised and recommended way to demonstrate compliance.

The frequency depends on the type of equipment and the environment. Generally, office equipment should be tested every 2–4 years, while equipment in more demanding environments should be tested annually or more frequently.

They are the same thing. PAT testing has been renamed to EET (Electrical Equipment Testing) to clarify that all plug-in equipment needs testing, not just portable items. Both terms are still widely used.

The time depends on the number of appliances. A typical small office with 20–30 items can usually be completed within an hour or two. Larger premises may take a full day.

We cover Bristol, Bath, South Gloucestershire, North East Somerset, Keynsham, Portishead, Yate, Clevedon, Weston-super-Mare, and across the wider South West and South Wales regions.

If an appliance fails, it will be clearly labelled and recorded in your report. We'll advise whether it can be repaired or should be removed from use.
