What is EET Testing?

What is EET Testing?

What is EET Testing?

Electrical Equipment Testing (EET) is the new name for Portable Appliance Testing, or PAT testing as it is more commonly called. It is the inspection and testing of electrical appliances to ensure they are safe to use and do not present a risk of fire or electrocution to a user.

Why is PAT testing now called EET Testing?

PAT testing was renamed to EET Testing as it was felt that the name itself was misleading. PAT stands for Portable Appliance Testing and not all the appliances and equipment that should be tested are, in fact, portable. Many people misunderstood what items were covered and believed that only smaller electrical items such as kettles, microwaves and toasters needed to be tested. In reality, items such as fridges, ovens, workshop machinery and heated towel rails all need to be tested too. By renaming to Electrical Equipment Testing, it is easier for everyone to understand exactly what needs to be inspected.

What electrical equipment should be tested?

As mentioned above EET Testing should be carried out on all electrical equipment that provide for your employees, tenants or service users at youur Bristol premises.

This includes:

  • Kitchen electricals such as kettles and toasters
  • IT equipment including laptops, monitors and printers
  • Cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaners
  • Large appliances including washing machines and dishwashers
  • Extension cords
  • Power tools and workshop equipment

The electrician who carries out your EET testing will be happy to let you know which equipment needs to be tested and what does not.

Who needs EET Testing?

Nothing has changed in respect to who should have EET Testing carried out, the rules and recommendations remain the same as they were for PAT Testing.

Commercial properties - If you are an employer then the under regulations including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and Electricity at Work Regulations (1989) you must ensure you maintain an electrically safe environment for your employees. This include ensuring any electrical equipment they use is “maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair” (The Provision and use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998). The simplest way to do this is to carry out regular EET Testing at your Bristol premises.

Landlords and letting agents – If you are the landlord or letting agent for a residential property in Bristol and you provide any electrical equipment to your tenants then you should have regular EET Testing carried out at your properties. As with commercial properties, landlords have a duty to ensure their tenants are kept electrically safe. EET testing, alongside EICR testing helps you to meet your legal obligations.
